Develop A Unique Style With Vintage Elements

Developing your own unique look and personal style can be challenging when it seems like all of the stores sell different versions of the same thing, trends are constantly changing or it just seems too damn complicated to navigate the overwhelming world of fashion. Developing my own personal style has been a life-long journey but at 50 I feel I am finally settled in to what looks and feels best for me. While I tend to lean toward simple, minimalistic well-made basics, I do like implementing pieces like vintage to create a look that feels special and unique.

I always say that wearing vintage does not mean you have to look vintage. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that vintage aesthetic, but most people I know are not willing to go all in on that look. So adding one vintage element to your outfit can be just as fun and much more approachable. That can be as small as a piece of jewelry or as significant as a dress styled with modern accessories. The objective is for the outfit to feel good and special to you, specifically. Pleasing yourself should be the first priority because when you feel good, you look good. It's a bit of a cliché but it's true.

Incorporating Vintage For a Unique Style

I updated this vintage 70s sweatshirt with a slim denim skirt, modern sneakers and a trucker-style hat. It's sporty and fun and easy to throw together with items you already have in your closet.

My daughter bought this vintage scarf for me in Paris and I love it. I showed it two ways, tied around my neck and then around my wrist for a more subtle addition. This adds some interest to a simple white tee and jeans. It's a unique piece that only I have and every time I wear it, it feels special.

This striped vintage 80s skirt is so cute. Since it was relatively full, I added a slim tank and then a cropped denim jacket and my favorite strappy sandals. So many ways you could wear this to make it your own.

This skirt has such a cute western print. It's styled two ways; with a long cozy cardigan and boots and then a button-up and sneakers.

In the photo on the left the shorts are actually vintage from the 80s, paired with current pieces you would never know, but they are unique and one-of-a-kind, no one else is going to have these. In the photo on the right, the top is thrifted and upcycled and the shorts are vintage 90s Levi's.

When it comes to styling vintage, the possibilities are endless. I like to stick to my simple, minimalist style and just add a vintage piece here and there. The advantage of wearing vintage is that it's, typically, one-of-a-kind and how you decide to wear is uniquely you.
